Kaupoi Wero — the obstacles

Ten obstacles in a single run. Five are set, and five are drawn from a hat the day before. Each is scored out of ten, and the whole course is timed.

Youth skip the clover leaf jump and the double rider, so they ride eight and are scored out of 80. Open riders ride all ten, out of 100.
  1. Clover leaf jump

Canter a four leaf clover pattern, clearing the jump placed in the middle of the pattern twice.

    1 minuteyouth skip
  2. Log drag

Back your horse into position and grab the lead rope by standing in the saddle. Drag the attached log over the marked line facing away from the log, then drag it backwards, facing the log, until it is back where it started. Stand back on top of the saddle and replace the lead rope how you found it.

    1 minute
  3. Trap empty

Side pass over the pole until you are in a position to empty the possum trap. Remove the teddy bear and place it on top of the post above the trap, then side pass back to the start point.

    1 minute
  4. Double rider

Pick up your doubler from the ground, then ride over and open and close the gate. Once the gate latch is secured your doubler can get off.

    1 minuteyouth skip
  5. Hoof stand ground tie

Ground tie your horse, pick up the front left hoof and place it on the hoof stand, then walk 360 degrees around the horse cracking a stock whip at least three times — or swinging the stock whip above your head for fewer points. The horse must keep its foot on the stand until you take it off.

    1 minute

Obstacles 6 to 10 are the mystery obstacles, drawn the day before.

Mystery obstacles

Five of these ten are drawn from a hat the day before the challenge. Nobody knows which until then.

  • Cross a bridge
  • Enter the keyhole at a canter, stop, and back out without touching the sides
  • Boat drag — drag the boat to a designated area
  • Pulley lift — pull a garden bag filled with contents up into the air, then manoeuvre your horse sideways so the slack stays out of the pulley rope, and place it on the designated fence batten
  • Stock whip targets — crack three targets hanging above your head so they are dislodged and fall from their sockets
  • Garden bag bending — bend up and down the poles holding a big garden bag
  • Reversing through an L — back your horse in an L pattern without touching the sides
  • Side pass over poles without touching the poles
  • Flag carry — carry the flag to a designated spot
  • Rope the dummy — throw the lasso and catch the roping dummy around its head

Horsesports

Four races on the Saturday. Six barrels mark the lanes, so heats run six at a time. Win your heat and you go through to the final.

  • Reversing stock horse
  • Bend the flag
  • Remix medley
  • Flag in flag out

Friday divisions

Kids and Rookies are individual events, run like Horsesports — stock horse, bending and flag, heats into a final, six barrels a heat.

Team Horsesports Jackpot is the only team event: four riders, at least one wahine, riding stock whip and ring, reverse bending, and long flag side pass, relay style.

Beach race

The last race of the day. Helmets mandatory.

Start the race backwards. Reverse until you pass the orange markers, 10 metres from the start line. Turn your horse straight, then veer right towards the sea.

Go around the marker placed in the water before veering left, continue to the next marker, then veer slightly right.

There will be six poles to choose from in the distance. You must pluck out a pole and cross the finish line with it in hand to qualify for a placing.

Points

Points from all three Saturday events add up. Ride all three on the same horse in the Open Division and you are eligible for the trophy saddle.

Team Horsesports Jackpot scoring

15 points for 1st in an event, 10 for 2nd, 5 for 3rd. After all three events the points are added up and the team with the most points wins.

Jackpot points are cash and stay separate. They do not count towards the saddle.

Prize money

Entry money goes back out as prize money.

Every entry dollar goes back out as prize money, so the amounts below are what a full field pays. Fewer riders means a smaller pool — the prizes go up and down with the entries.

Team Horsesports Jackpot — 12 teams at $200 makes a pool of up to $2,400 for the winning team.

Rookie Horsesports Jackpot — 36 riders at $50 makes a pool of up to $1,800, split across the three races. That's up to $600 a race: up to $300 to 1st, $180 to 2nd and $120 to 3rd.

Kids — 18 riders at $20 makes a pool of up to $360, split across the three races. That's up to $120 a race: up to $60 to 1st, $36 to 2nd and $24 to 3rd.
